Structurally PPA is just amphetamine with an additional hydroxyl group.
PPA used to be widely found in pharmacies as the active ingredients of nasal decongestants, antitussants and cold and flu remedies but was taken off the shelves due to a reported increased rate of strokes associated with the drug.
PPA is sometimes used as a precursor in the illicit synthesis of amphetamine by clandestine chemists. PPA is reduced to amphetamine the same way ephedrine is reduced to methamphetamine. There are 4 optical isomers of PPA named d- and l-norephedrine, and d- and l-norpseudoephedrine. In most countries now PPA is only available as a prescription medication.
